George Vella nominated as next President of Malta
George Vella will replace outgoing President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca
Former Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella has been nominated as Malta’s next president, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat confirmed today. Dr.Vella’s nomination comes with the full support of the cabinent and the Labour Party’s parliamentary group.
Dr. Vella will take up the mantle after the outgoing President, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca’s term ends on the 4th of April.
Boasting a long career in parliamentary affairs, Dr. Vella was elected a member of parliament in January 1978 and then during the 1981, 1992, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013 general elections.
He was also elected as the Labour Party deputy leader for parliamentary affairs and spokesperson on foreign affairs in 1992.
He previously served as vice chairman on the Joint EU and Malta Parliamentary Committee, and later was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Environment in October 1996 and again in March 2013.
Dr. Vella was born in Zejtun in 1942. He is married to Miriam and has three children and seven grandchildren.
